Mandatory Meet Position Descriptions

Starter **-This person is responsible for running the meet.  He or she announces each race, starts each race, and then paces the speed of all of the events in the meet.  This person should be someone with previous training or swim team experience.  This position is only needed for home meets.

Stroke-n-Turn **- This person is responsible for viewing each race from the side of the pool and disqualifying swimmers when an infraction occurs.  This person MUST have special training by indoor YMCA’s or the summer swim league in order to complete this job.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Timers- There are seven timers needed for every meet, one for each lane and then a back-up timer.  Each timer is assigned one lane prior to the start of the meet.  Timers are responsible for timing each swimmer in their assigned lane with a provided stopwatch and then recording the time on the pink, blue, or white cards.  The cards are then collected by the runner after each race.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Marshallers- There are three marshallers needed for every meet.  These people are extremely important, as they are responsible for getting all of the swimmers, especially the younger ones, lined up and ready for their races (in the correct order and lanes).  Marshallers should be familiar with team members in order to make the job easier.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Recorders *- There are two recorders needed for every meet.  These people sit at the official scorer’s table and record the swimmers’ times and the number of points in each of the meet’s 32 events.  These points are added up to produce a final score at the end of the meet.  Calculators are provided to make this job easier.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Ribbons- There are three people needed to work at the ribbons table every meet.  We are the only team in the league that provides swimmers with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for every race, whether it is official or unofficial.  People at the ribbons table must take information from the timers’ cards and then transfer the name of each swimmer, his/her time, and the event onto each ribbon for swimmers to receive at the end-of-the-year banquet.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Across-the-Board *- This person is responsible for judging the order in which the swimmers finish in each race.  This person must write the order in which the lanes finish for each race, which is then used for scoring at the recorder’s table.  This person is usually positioned at the end of the pool in order to see each finish.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Runner- This person is responsible for collecting all of the cards from each timer after each race and then bringing them to the recorder’s table and ribbons table so that times can be entered.  This position is needed for both home and away meets.

Heat Ribbons- This person distributes the heat ribbon, or first place ribbon, to the swimmer who comes in first place in EVERY race throughout the meet.  He or she stands near the across-the-board person at the end of the pool in order to see each finish.  This position is only needed for home meets.

50/50- This person is responsible for selling 50/50 tickets throughout the meet to raise money for the team.  The 50/50 is always pulled before the relays (the end of the meet); therefore, this person must stop selling tickets approximately 30 minutes prior to the end of the meet.  This position is only needed for home meets.

Event Number Turner - This person is responsible for sitting next to the starter and turning the event and heat numbers as the meet progresses. This position is only needed for home meets.
